Why is Active Learning Crucial?
Some educationists argue that all learning practices are active in nature and, therefore claim a student watching a presentation is also in active learning process. However, studies show that students need to do much more than listening in order to learn. Students should read, write, discuss and find solutions to prospective problems for effective learning. Advanced thinking skills like analysis, synthesis, and assessment are especially important for students to actively participate in the classes. These skills are acquired and improved by active learning. Applying active learning techniques in classroom environment bears a vital importance “considering its effects on learning experience”.
Active learning is a learner- centered approach and it is the most effective way of providing students’ learning. Many studies show that active learning approach, beyond increasing the achievement of students, helps raising curiosity among students, using and improving information, improving independent learning experiences and improve the ability to make future plans. Similarly learner- centered education approach helps to improve social relations and increase success.
With active learning students experience learning by interactive activities, therefore students acquire advanced level knowledge and skill easier and increase their success. It is concluded that students show more interest in order to understand the subject in active learning environment. After all the studies conducted it is now a crystal-clear fact that active learning is essential for good quality education.
