Description of the Activity:
Treasure hunt is a web-based technique designed for students to be able to create a real content on a specific topic. The basic strategy for this activity is students finding the correct web page containing information (written, visual, auditory, video, etc) related to the topic by following the clues and using problem-solving skills. Each web page that is found contains a part of the correct information about the topic and clue for the next web page. When the last aimed web page is reached, the detailed answer for the problem in the center is gained. This activity is useful for when special basis for the information needed is created and real information that is appropriate for the aim gained. In treasure hunt, there is a central question and students collect clues during the hunt for the central question. In this activity, the scope of the students’ answers demonstrates the level of their understanding of the topic.
Aim of the Activity:
1. To support students’ problem-solving skills.
2. To provide support on presentation of the topic.
3. To develops students’ research-questioning skills.
Implementation Steps:
1. About the topic chosen, 10-15 web pages whose content is rich, real and appropriate are determined.
2. A key or central question and clue that will awaken in the students a desire to discover the truth and details is chosen on the web page.
3. What is expected and outcomes that are wanted are explained to the students.
4. The process of treasure hunt is explained to the students briefly and questions are answered when needed.
4. It is made sure that the students progress smoothly during the treasure hunt.
Evaluation:
In the treasure hunt activity, it is desired that students reach the correct answer by developing their problem-solving skills. It is especially important to evaluate the process as it is a process-based work. In the process the following are used:an observation form which is formed during the process for the students, a self-evaluation form in which the students can assess himself/herself.
