STUDENT MAGAZINE

Description of the Activity:

Preparing a magazine is acomprehensive activity that can be applied for many topics. As well as making students do a detailed research on a specific topic, with preparing, designing and displaying the magazine in the process, traits such as entrepreneurship, responsibility are solidified.

Aim of the Activity:

1. To enhance students’ entrepreneurship skills.

2. To make a way for developing students’ creative thinking skills with the responsibility that is given.

3. To provide detailed information about the topic that is given.

4. To provide different perspectives.

 

Implementation Steps:

1. Students are asked to form groups of approximately 10 people.

2. A topic that constitutes a large portion of the lesson and attracts students’ attention is shared with all of the groups.

3. Each group is told to deal differently with the topic whose frame is determined.

4. In line with topics that are chosen, they are asked to prepare a magazine that discusses the topic in a detailed way by cooperating in the group.

5. Each group, without guidance, prepares their magazines by using their own creativity.

6. Each magazine is distributed to each group.

7. All of the topics are discussed with the students through magazines.

8. Groups are asked to reach the large masses with their magazines using their creativity and entrepreneurship.

 

Evaluation:

For the magazine prepared by each group, a rubric should be created. In this form, criteria that will be graded should be indicated and weighting of each criterion should be defined. For instance, criteria such as the layout, content, being scientific, actuality, strikingness of the magazine can be defined and points such as strikingness of the name, magazine’s content being in line with the topic, appropriateness of the magazine’s sections, scientific accuracy of the magazine can be added to these criteria. This form should be shared with the students prior to the activity. At the same time, the performances of the students in terms of advertising their magazine are included in the evaluation process.

Additional Information:

The current activity is too long to be carried out in the class; therefore, it is mostly prepared outside the class. The time that is given to the groups should not exceed 15 days. For the products will be done after the time given, lesson plan should be prepared accordingly. The topics for magazines can be chosen by the students or with the help of an instructor. It should not be forgotten that the topic should be up-to-date, important and having enough difficulty for the activity to be attractive and to reach its goal.
